A Real-Time RT-PCR Assay for Genotyping of Rotavirus Strains
Background: Human rotavirus (HRV) is the causative agent of severe gastroenteritis in children and responsible for two million hospitalizations and more than a half-million deaths annually. Sequence characteristics of the gene segments encoding the VP7 and VP4 proteins are used for the genotype classification of rotavirus. A wide variety of molecular methods are available, mainly based on rever...
متن کاملOptimum diagnostic assay and clinical specimen for routine rotavirus surveillance.
Rates of detection of rotavirus were compared by diagnostic assay and specimen type. For bulk stools, rates of detection by reverse transcriptase PCR (RT-PCR) and enzyme immunoassay (EIA) were similar, but 18% of healthy controls tested positive by RT-PCR. Testing of bulk stools by EIA appears to be optimum for rotavirus surveillance.
متن کاملMalaria genotyping for epidemiologic surveillance.
Malaria control and elimination have, for more than a century, relied on traditional surveillance methods: catching mosquitoes or examining blood slides under a light microscope. Recent technological advances have started to change the game, including highquality rapid diagnostic tests for malaria. At the same time, advances in the study of parasite genetics, especially for Plasmodium falciparu...
متن کاملGenotyping Rotavirus RNA from Archived Rotavirus-Positive Rapid Test Strips
Genotyping circulating rotaviruses before and after introduction of rotavirus vaccine is useful for evaluating vaccine-associated changes in genotype distribution. We determined frequency of rotavirus genotypes among 61 rotavirus-positive children hospitalized in Israel during the 2005-06 rotavirus season. Accurate molecular epidemiologic data were recovered from affinity-concentrated rotavirus...
متن کاملRotavirus surveillance in Australia.
In Australia, an estimated 10,000 hospitalisations and one death occur annually in children under 5 years, mostly in children aged under two years.3 Among those under one year, hospitalisation rates are five times greater in Indigenous Australians compared with non-Indigenous children.4 In addition to hospital admissions, 22,000 emergency department visits attributable to rotavirus are estimate...
